Checkincreta.com proposes you five villages of Crete to visit in May. These villages are:
•Vamos
Vamos
is a traditional hilly village in the vegetated region of Apokoronas at
Chania and preserves its authentic Cretan character to a great extent.
The whole village is ornamented with jasmine and bougainvilleas, which
creep out of balconies and yards. During the summer, the villagers hold
several cultural events, fostering traditional arts.
•Axos
Axos
is a village in the municipality of Milopotamos, at Rethymno and it
belongs in mountainous Mylopotamos. Below the village, between Mount Ida
(Psiloritis) and Talaia Mountains, there is a vast valley, full of
orchards and olive groves, vineyards and all kinds of trees; orange
trees, tangerine trees, walnut trees, cherry trees, mulberry trees,
apple trees, pomegranates, fig trees, locusts, sycamore trees and kermes
oaks. More than ten water springs can be found at the wider region of
the village, streaming water all over the year, while one of them adorns
the center of the village. Out of the mouths of three lions, there
gushes cold water during the summer and hot water during the winter.
This spring and the shadow of its adjacent age-old plane tree constitute
a magnet for passing-by villagers and visitors.
•Agios Ioannis
The
village of Agios Ioannis Kamenos is located south of Rethymno city and
belongs to the municipality of Agios Vassilios. The village is located
at the entrance of the gorge of Kotsyfos, at the foothills of verdant
Armos, in a nice location amidst olive groves, vineyards and gardens, at
an elevation of 460 meters. According to a story, the village was named
after an icon of the namesake Saint, which had been found after a bush
was burnt. This icon still exists and one of its edge is burnt.
•Houdetsi
Houdetsi
is a traditional village south of Heraklion, that has developed into a
cultural center. The scenic beauty of the village, as well as the
inhabitants' love for music have played a central role in world traveler
and renowned musician Ross Daly's settling in Houdetsi. With the aid of
the former municipality of Nikos Kazantzakis, the great musician
founded the Music Workshop “Labyrinth” in 1982, housing a museum of
traditional musical instruments and aiming at introducing the youth to a
creative approach to musical traditions from around the world. Famed
Houdetsi Festival has been established and is held annually in the
village during the summer, featuring a four-day feast of music, dance,
food and art.
•Kavousi
Kavousi
is a lively village of Ierapetra municipality, where a lot of
activities are organized, on the foothills of two imposing mountains, at
an elevation of 140 m, with a view to the valley and the seawater of
the Cretan Sea. One of the most interesting sites of the area is the
olive tree of Kavousi, which is estimated to be around 5,000 years old,
and this olive tree is considered as the most ancient Minoan tree, since
it is surrounded by four nearby ancient settlements: Vrontos, Plai tou
Kastrou, Azoria Acropolis and Kavousi, which dates from A.D. 4700, since
when it has been continuously inhabited.
