Myrtia - Μυρτιά

In September 1960 in Athens, Nikos Gatsos met Myrtia (Myrto - Μυρτώ), the wife of Mikis Theodorakis. Nikos Gatsos wrote these lyrics that Mikis then set to music.

In my mind's eye the sea
And a garden, a celestial garden,
As I climbed onwards
To the upper village.

At the windows wide
Stood Myrtia smiling.
Wearied from climbing
I asked her and asked her:

Tell me, Myrtia, I'd grateful be,
Where shall I find earth, find earth
and water,
To rebuild a nest
For the birds of love.

At the windows wide
I saw Myrtia weeping,
As I climbed onwards
To the upper village.

Είχα μια θάλασσα στο νου
κι ένα περβόλι, περιβόλι τ' ουρανού.
Την ώρα π' άνοιγα πανιά
για την απάνω γειτονιά.
Στα παραθύρια τα πλατιά
χαμογελούσε μια μυρτιά.
Κουράστηκα να περπατώ
και τη ρωτώ και τη ρωτώ
– Πες μου, μυρτιά, να σε χαρώ:
Πού θα βρω χώμα, θα βρω χώμα και νερό
να ξαναχτίσω μια φωλιά
για της αγάπης τα πουλιά;
Στα παραθύρια τα πλατιά
είδα και δάκρυσε η μυρτιά.
Την ώρα π' άνοιγα πανιά
για την απάνω γειτονιά.
